Here are some pictures of Gavi on her first few days at home:
Gavi Noa Stamm has made her entry into our house and our lives seamlessly. Of course we tried to prepare Leo as best as we could but you never know how things are going to go until they actually happen - especially with a toddler. How did the big meeting go between Leo and Gavi? It went SO well! Thank you to Aunt Erin who had obviously been prepping him for the big event. When she brought him to the house (after having a cousins sleepover for 4 nights!) he was so excited to meet Gavi! Here is a video of their first meeting (reminder: if you're reading this in your email, videos don't come through so make sure to visit the actual blog to watch videos):
Isn't that so sweet? He has stepped into his role as Big Brother really well. He can't stop kissing her head, he peers into the bassinet and pack-n-play to make sure she's in there and sleeping, he asks about her every morning when he wakes up, every time she cries he says "baby sad" and is genuinely concerned, he always makes sure she's "eating milk", and he keeps trying to share his food with her. We keep telling him that although he's being a great sharer, the baby can't eat muffins and cookies quite yet. The first couple days we were home, Brad and I kept saying the same thing to each other - Leo seems HUGE! He's not even two years old and to most people, a two year old is really small - even sometimes considered a baby still - but since we'd only been around a newborn for the last few days, Leo seemed absolutely giant. He seemed so tall, so strong, he has a big boy haircut (as opposed to baby peachfuzz), he is running around, talking, voicing opinions, and wears size 5 diapers whereas Gavi is wearing size Newborn. It has just been a shock to have them both together - our really big baby and our really tiny baby.
Leo even showed off his really cool Big Brother shirt at school to tell all of his friends that he's a big brother now. Thanks Aunt Alissa!:
Gavi is super alert. She opens her eyes - wide - no, I meal reeeally wide. Uncle Gabe lovingly compared her to an alien. Hey, she's got those big ole Asman eyes:
The one thing we're having trouble with is nighttime. Gavi seems to have it in her mind that the correct thing to do is to sleep all day and party all night. She sleeps soundlessly all day long - nothing disturbs her. Then as soon as we put her down in the bassinet next to our bed at night, it's like a switch flips and all of the sudden, she needs to be held. Nothing else will suffice. When we swaddle her, we've tried to tuck her arms in and we've tried to leave her arms free. I've tried a nightlight on and a nightlight off. We've tried tighter swaddles and we've tried looser swaddles. Turns out she only wants two things - to suck and to snuggle. Hey, you can't blame her, can you? Brad has found that if she sucks his finger that pacifies her, so he's got that going for him. But if I try to give her my finger she's like "oooh no, nice try Mom, I know you have the real stuff" so this newborn forces me to nurse her. Then she's content and falls asleep on our chests. Are you following the theme? She's just such a little snuggler, you can't blame her!
We also had our first (and second) doctor's appointments this week. We brought her to the doctor on Monday when she was 3 days old because she's been spitting up a lot. Leo did the same exact thing and we had him take Zantac. The doctor said that it sounds like we've had experience with this before so usually she wouldn't prescribe it at such a young age but since we've been through it before, she knows we know what we're looking out for. After a few days it's kicked in and although she's still spitting up, it's way better than it was before and she seems a lot more comfortable. At three days she was at 6lbs 15 oz (after being born at 7lbs 5 oz) which the doctor was really happy with. Here are some pictures from the (semi chaotic) appointment:
On the way home, Brad and I had an "is this real life?" moment - check out how we now drive, as a family of four. Mom and Dad, two carseats, two babies. How did we get here???:
Are you wondering how I grew throughout my pregnancy? Well, I gained 35-40 lbs this time - I definitely started showing way earlier than I did with Leo and I was pretty much sedentary the last couple of months because of my back, so that all being said I think I'm pretty lucky to have only gained that much. Take a look for yourself:
And here we go, 41 weeks in and 1 week out. My, how things change in a week:
